Mark Giordano has torn biceps

Calgary Flames star defenseman and captain Mark Giordano is out for the season with a torn biceps, general manager Brad Treliving told reporters during a news conference Monday.

Giordano, 31, was enjoying a breakout season, with 11 goals and 37 assists in 61 games for the Flames. The injury to the Norris Trophy candidate happened during a 3-1 win at New Jersey last week. He will have surgery Wednesday and is expected to be out four to five months.

The injury is a crushing blow to the Flames (33-25-4), who are fighting for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"It's ripped all of our guts right out, that's what it's done," Treliving said.

The Flames mostly stood pat at the trade deadline despite announcing the news on Giordano. Calgary's only trade on Monday was dealing 2011 first-round draft pick Sven Baertschi to Vancouver for a second-round draft pick in 2015.
