Cam Atkinson gets 3-year extension

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Cam Atkinson to a three-year contract extension, an NHL source told ESPN.com.

The deal is worth a total of $10.5 million, with an annual salary-cap charge of $3.5 million.

Atkinson was scheduled to be a restricted free agent after this season and was pursued in the trade market before the Blue Jackets decided to sign him to the extension.

Atkinson scored 21 goals last season, his first full campaign in the NHL. He has 13 goals and 12 assists in 58 games this season.

The breakdown of his contract is $2.5 million in 2015-16, $3.5 million in 2016-17 and $4.5 million in the last season of the deal.
