Penguins acquire Daniel Winnik

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded pending unrestricted free agent winger Daniel Winnik to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In exchange, the Leafs receive forward Zach Sill, Pittsburgh's second-round pick in the 2016 draft and Pittsburgh's fourth-round pick in the 2015 draft.

The Leafs retain 50 percent of Winnik's salary-cap hit, according to a source, which is important given how little cap space the Penguins have.

Winnik was highly sought after on the trade market with several teams making offers.

The Penguins also were busy making trades in January, picking up winger David Perron and center Maxim Lapierre.

Sill was really thrown into the deal to also help the money work on the Pittsburgh end of things. Sill, 26, becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1, although the Leafs do want to take a look at him down the stretch.
