Injury sidelines Leafs' Dion Phaneuf

NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs

TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs were in free fall entering the All-Star break and will begin the stretch run without captain Dion Phaneuf.

The Leafs announced Monday that their top defenseman would be out "week to week" with an upper-body injury.

Phaneuf fought twice just before the break, Jan. 19 versus Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes and Jan. 21 against Milan Michalek of the Ottawa Senators, and the injury may have occurred during either fight.

The Leafs enter Wednesday night's game at New Jersey 10 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference having lost 14 of their last 17 games (3-14-0), including six straight.
