John Scott banned without pay

NHL, San Jose Sharks

San Jose Sharks forward John Scott has been suspended by the NHL for four games without pay for punching Anaheim Ducks forward Tim Jackman, the league announced Wednesday.

Scott was banned for punching "an unsuspecting opponent and causing injury," according to a statement released by the NHL.

The incident took place in Anaheim on Monday when Scott struck Jackman in the face after a play in the second period of the Ducks' 3-2 overtime win, sending him crumpling to the ice. He did not receive a penalty.

Under the collective bargaining agreement, Scott is considered a repeat offender after he was previously suspended for an illegal hit to the head and will forfeit $34,146.36 based on his annual salary. The money goes to the players' emergency assistance fund.

Scott also was suspended in October, for two games, for coming onto the ice to fight Jackman.

Scott has one goal, one assist and 24 penalty minutes in 15 games played this season. He will miss a rematch against the Ducks next Wednesday before becoming eligible to return Jan. 5.
