SUNRISE, Fla. -- Nick Bjugstad scored the winning goal in the longest shootout in NHL history to lift the Florida Panthers over the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Tuesday night.
Bjugstad's goal came in the 20th round -- on the 40th shot of the shootout -- and beat Braden Holtby on the right side. The previous NHL record was 15 rounds, when the New York Rangers beat Washington on Nov. 26, 2005.
The Panthers outscored the Capitals 6-5 in the tiebreaker; and the six goals were the most in a shootout. Jussi Jokinen, Dave Bolland, Derek MacKenzie, Sean Bergenheim and Dylan Olsen were also successful for Florida.
The Panthers were down to their last shot five times and answered each time.
Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich, Joel Ward, John Carlson and Brooks Orpik had shootout goals for the Capitals.
Derek MacKenzie scored in regulation for Florida, and Roberto Luongo made 23 saves.
Troy Brouwer scored for Washington, and Holtby stopped 28 shots.
LIGHTNING 3, FLYERS 1
PHILADELPHIA -- Steven Stamkos and Tyler Johnson scored second-period goals to lead Tampa Bay over Philadelphia.
Valtteri Filppula added an empty-net goal, and Ryan Callahan had a pair of assists for the Lightning (20-10-3), who won for the second time in six games.
Andrei Vasilevskiy, the No. 19 pick in the 2012 draft, made 23 saves to win his NHL debut.
Wayne Simmonds scored for Philadelphia (11-14-5), which was 3-0-2 in its previous five games but lost its sixth straight to Tampa Bay. The Flyers are 3-12-1 against the Lightning since the 2010-11 season.
Simmonds has six goals in six games. Steve Mason made 20 saves for Philadelphia.
Vasilevskiy started in place of Ben Bishop, who left Monday's loss at Pittsburgh with a lower-body injury.
CANADIENS 4, HURRICANES 1
MONTREAL -- Alex Galchenyuk scored a career-best three goals, and Montreal beat Carolina for its third straight win.
Brandon Prust added a goal, and Carey Price stopped 25 shots for the Canadiens (20-10-2).
Victor Rask was the only goal scorer for Carolina (8-19-3), which has lost six in a row. Cam Ward made 25 saves. The Hurricanes have scored just one goal in each of the losses in their skid.
After losing three straight on the road, the Canadiens have won three consecutive on their homestand.
BLUE JACKETS 1, RED WINGS 0, SO
DETROIT -- Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30 shots through overtime and two more in a shootout as Columbus outlasted Detroit for its seventh straight win.
Boone Jenner and Ryan Johansen both scored in the tiebreaker for Columbus against Jimmy Howard, who made 29 saves. Detroit has lost four straight.
Columbus has three shootout wins during its streak.
Pavel Datsyuk had the lone shootout goal for Detroit, which has dropped three consecutive home games in shootouts.
PREDATORS 3, BRUINS 2, SO
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Derek Roy scored the only goal of the shootout to give Nashville a win over Boston.
Mike Fisher and Mike Ribeiro had goals in regulation for Nashville, which has won three of four. Milan Lucic and Reilly Smith scored for Boston. The Bruins have lost three in a row and six of seven.
In the tiebreaker, Roy beat Tuukka Rask with a backhand after nearly losing the puck on his rush.
Pekka Rinne made 33 saves in regulation and overtime and denied all three attempts in the shootout.
MAPLE LEAFS 6, DUCKS 2
TORONTO -- Phil Kessel scored two of Toronto's four third-period goals and the Maple Leafs beat Anaheim for their sixth straight victory, snapping the Ducks' eight-game winning streak.
David Booth scored his first of the season unassisted at 4:37 of the third before Nazem Kadri got his ninth at 5:28 to put Toronto ahead 4-1. Anaheim starter Frederik Andersen was replaced by Ilya Bryzgalov following Kadri's goal.
Jonathan Bernier stopped 40 shots and was instrumental as Toronto handed the Ducks their first loss in eight games this month. Anaheim outshot the Maple Leafs 42-27.
Ryan Kesler pulled Anaheim to 4-2 with his 11th of the season at 8:35. Kessel cemented the win on the power play at 15:23 before scoring his 17th goal at 18:17.
Tyler Bozak and Joffrey Lupul also scored for Toronto, which improved to 14-7 at home and 10-1-1 since a 9-2 loss to Nashville.
Sami Vatanen had the other goal for Anaheim, 11-4-2 on the road.
BLUES 5, KINGS 2
ST. LOUIS -- Vladimir Tarasenko scored three goals, and streaking St. Louis netted four in the third period in a comeback victory over Los Angeles.
The Blues have won five straight. They scored three times, including two power-play goals, in a span of 2:30 in the third. Tarasenko added an empty-net tally with 1:24 remaining for his 20th goal of the season.
Jake Allen made 21 saves for the Blues, who will begin a three-game road trip against the Kings on Thursday.
Los Angeles has lost three straight and five of six. The Kings have dominated the Blues in recent seasons, winning seven of eight in the regular season and 17 of 21 including the playoffs.
The Kings had taken control of this one when Marian Gaborik scored twice in the second period.
BLACKHAWKS 5, WILD 3
CHICAGO -- Patrick Kane scored a tiebreaking power-play goal with 3:28 left, and Chicago bounced back to beat Minnesota for its 13th win in 15 games.
Chicago's Jonathan Toews had a goal and two assists. Marian Hossa and Brent Seabrook also scored, and Ben Smith added an empty-net goal for the surging Blackhawks, who won without top defenseman Duncan Keith who was sidelined by an illness.
Nino Niederreiter scored on a penalty shot, and Marco Scandella fired in a screened goal in the third period for the Wild, who came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie it. Thomas Vanek had a first-period goal.
JETS 5, SABRES 1
WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Mark Scheifele scored two goals and added an assist, and Winnipeg broke Buffalo's four-game winning streak.
Michael Frolik and Evander Kane each had a goal and an assist, and Chris Thorburn also scored for Winnipeg. Frolik's goal was short-handed, and Kane found the back of the net on a power play.
Ondrej Pavelec made 27 saves in his 300th career start as Winnipeg outshot the Sabres 36-28.
Buffalo, which got a power-play goal from defenseman Nikita Zadorov, was coming off a 5-4 shootout win at home over the Ottawa Senators on Monday.
Michal Neuvirth stopped 31 shots for the Sabres.
RANGERS 5, FLAMES 2
CALGARY, Alberta -- Rick Nash scored two goals to reach 20 for the season, and the New York Rangers beat Calgary to sweep a three-game Western trip.
Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan, and Carl Hagelin also scored for New York, which will finish its road swing at Carolina on Saturday.
Jiri Hudler and Curtis Glencross -- with just 1:15 left -- scored for Calgary. After a terrific start to the season, the Flames have lost six straight in regulation for the first time since Jan. 13-25, 2010.
Nash has a career-best 11-game point streak, recording eight goals and six assists during the spurt. He tied Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin for the longest run in the NHL this season.
Henrik Lundqvist stopped two short-handed breakaways by Calgary: Lance Bouma on a 4-on-2 rush, and Josh Jooris on a 2-on-1 break. Lundqvist finished with 29 saves.
COYOTES 2, OILERS 1, OT
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored with 0.3 seconds left in overtime, and Arizona beat Edmonton to end a team-record, nine-game home losing streak.
The game appeared to be headed to a shootout, but Ekman-Larsson took a feed from Sam Gagner and beat Ben Scrivens just before the horn sounded. Ekman-Larsson was swarmed by teammates after helping the Coyotes end a five-game losing streak overall.
Brandon McMillan scored his first goal of the season and Arizona set a franchise record with 27 shots in the second period to extend its point streak to 17 games against Edmonton, a franchise mark against one team.
Devan Dubnyk stopped 30 shots for the Coyotes against his former team.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored and Scrivens stopped 42 shots for the Oilers in their first game since coach Dallas Eakins was fired on Monday. Edmonton has lost 16 of 17.
