Daniel Alfredsson to retire in Ottawa

NHL, Ottawa Senators

Daniel Alfredsson will announce an end to his career where it spent the vast majority of it.

Alfredsson, the former Ottawa Senators captain, will announce his retirement next Thursday in Ottawa, where he began his All-Star career in 1995-96, the team confirmed Thursday.

"Dec. 4 will be a truly special and historic day for the Ottawa Senators and Sens fans. Welcome home Alfie!" team owner Eugene Melnyk posted on his Twitter account.

Alfredsson left the Senators two summers ago over a bitter contract dispute and signed in Detroit, where he played just one season.

But Alfredsson and Senators general manager Bryan Murray rekindled their dialogue months ago and even this past week went for a car ride together in Detroit to catch up.

Back issues late last season and into his fall workouts this year led to Alfredsson's decision to retire. He turns 42 on Dec. 11.

Alfredsson spent his first 17 seasons with the Senators, scoring 426 goals and adding 682 assists in 1,178 regular-season games.
