MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Sergei Gonchar from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday for forward Travis Moen. Gonchar missed the first 11 games of the season with a foot injury and has one assist in three games since his return. The 40-year-old defenseman has 798 points (219 goals, 579 assists) in 1,256 regular-season games since making his NHL debut in 1994-'95. He has also played for the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators. Gonchar also represented Russia at four Olympic Games and won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009. "With Sergei going out it frees up a spot for a young defenseman to come in and play," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said after Dallas won at Arizona. "We've had all left-handed defensemen and we think a lot of (John) Klingberg, so that's one part of the trade. Moen, he's been a winner. He's won on previous teams he's played for and he's got some bite to his game. We know he's a little bit of a role player now and he should help us." Moen has yet to record a point in 10 games this season. Moen has 125 points (56 goals, 69 assists) in 690 regular-season games with the Canadiens, San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks.
