Sunday's NHL Capsules

NHL, Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Arizona Coyotes, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks

DENVER -- Defensemen Hampus Lindholm and Cam Fowler scored their first goals of the season 1:44 apart in the second period, and emergency starter Jason LaBarbera stopped 16 shots, lifting the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night.

Corey Perry also scored for the Ducks, who went 3-1 on a four-game trip. Perry leads the league with 11 goals.

Dennis Everberg scored his first NHL goal, and Nathan MacKinnon added another for weary Colorado, which also lost at St. Louis in a shootout on Saturday.

Anaheim's Francois Beauchemin drew a high-sticking penalty with 3:07 remaining, and Semyon Varlamov went to the bench for an extra skater, giving the Avs a 6-on-4 opportunity. But Colorado couldn't capitalize.

Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves.

COYOTES 6, CAPITALS 5

WASHINGTON -- Shane Doan scored twice, and Arizona salvaged something from its road trip, snapping a three-game skid with a come-from-behind win over mistake-prone Washington.

The Coyotes trailed 3-1 after the first period, but power-play goals by Michael Stone and Doan tied it in the second before Sam Gagner and Doan capitalized on sloppy turnovers early in the third. Doan's second goal came after Washington's Alex Ovechkin -- who earlier broke a six-game goal drought -- completely whiffed trying to control the puck near the side boards in the Capitals' end.

Antoine Vermette tallied in the first period, and Tobias Rieder added his first NHL goal late in the third for the Coyotes, who had been outscored 12-4 in the first three games of their trip.

Mikkel Boedker assisted on both third-period goals, ending his streak of seven games without a point, and Devan Dubnyk made 32 saves.

Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, John Carlson, Joel Ward and Troy Brouwer scored for the Capitals, and Nicklas Backstrom had three assists. Washington dropped its fourth straight -- while allowing at least four goals in each loss.

HURRICANES 3, KINGS 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Elias Lindholm's second-period goal proved to be the difference in Carolina's victory over Los Angeles.

The Hurricanes (2-6-2) won for the second straight day. The Kings are 0-3-2 on the road and 6-1 at home in the early stages of their Stanley Cup title defense.

Victor Rask and Chris Terry also scored for the Hurricanes.

Mike Richards and Alec Martinez had goals for Los Angeles.

Carolina's Cam Ward, making his third straight start and coming off a shutout win on Saturday, made 30 saves.

Jonathan Quick stopped 29 shots for the Kings.

SABRES 3, RED WINGS 2, SO

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Tyler Ennis and Zemgus Girgensons scored shootout goals, and Buffalo edged Detroit.

Michal Neuvirth made 36 saves and stopped Henrik Zetterberg in the third round of the shootout to help the Sabres (3-9-1) win at home for the first time this season.

Brian Flynn and Chris Stewart both scored their first goals of the season, and Tyson Strachan had two assists for Buffalo, which beat Detroit for the first time since Oct. 13, 2009.

Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist, Tomas Tatar also scored, and Jimmy Howard made 19 saves for Detroit (6-3-2), which had a two-game winning streak snapped.

FLAMES 6, CANADIENS 2

MONTREAL -- Josh Jooris scored two goals to lead Calgary to a rout of Montreal.

Markus Granlund, Curtis Glencross, Lance Bouma, and Mark Giordano also scored for Calgary (7-2-4), and Jonas Hiller stopped 18 shots in the opener of the Flames' five-game trip.

Max Pacioretty and Rene Bourque had goals for Montreal (8-3-1). Carey Price made 30 saves in defeat.

Calgary bounced back from a recent 2-1 home loss to the Canadiens. Montreal had been 4-0 at home, and was looking for its best start there since 1979.

The Flames came into this one with just five first-period goals in their first 12 games, but they put two past Price in the opening 20 minutes and outshot Montreal 19-4 in the period.

JETS 1, BLACKHAWKS 0

CHICAGO -- Michael Hutchinson stopped 33 shots for his first career shutout, and Michael Frolik scored 20 seconds in on the first shift of the game to lead Winnipeg over Chicago.

Hutchinson was solid in just his second start, first complete game and third appearance this season.

The Jets extended their point streak to five games (4-0-1) and recorded their second shutout in two nights. No. 1 goalie Ondrej Pavelec beat the Rangers 1-0 in New York on Saturday in a shootout.

The 24-year-old Hutchinson entered having played only 40 minutes this season.

Corey Crawford stopped 26 shots in his second start in two nights after he missed six games with an upper-body injury. The Blackhawks lost their second straight and are 2-5 in their last seven.

Chicago was beaten 1-0 for the second consecutive home game.

Both teams played for the third time in four nights. Winnipeg went 3-0-1 on its four-game trip.

PREDATORS 3, CANUCKS 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Filip Forsberg scored twice and added an assist, and Nashville held on to top Vancouver.

Colin Wilson also scored, and Pekka Rinne made 26 saves for the Predators (7-2-2), who won for the second time in three games of their six-game road trip.

Defenseman Alex Edler scored the only goal for the Canucks (8-4), who had a four-game winning streak snapped before they head out on a trip through California and Colorado.

Eddie Lack, making his first start since allowing seven goals at Colorado on Oct. 24, stopped 30 shots.
