What you missed in NHL this week

It was a crazy week in the hockey world, with the top stories grabbing national headlines and transcending the sport. You'd have to be living under a rock to miss some of these, but just in case you need a refresher, we've got you covered on all that happened around the league.

1. Slava Voynov arrested

After last month's scandal involving former Baltimore Raven Ray Rice and the NFL, plenty of people wondered how the NHL would have reacted to a similar domestic violence case. Well, we have a better idea now after the league moved swiftly to suspend Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov within hours of his arrest on charges of felony domestic assault Monday morning. The investigation is ongoing, but Voynov's status leaves a whole slew of questions behind for the Kings to answer in the meantime. Story »

2. Leafs-Senators game postponed

All of us here recognize the greatness of the game, but there are times when sports are truly put into perspective, and that was evident on Wednesday when the league made the right (and only) decision to postpone that night's game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators after the tragic shootings in Ottawa earlier that day. Furthermore, the hockey community showed a remarkable solidarity after the stunning events, as fans belted out the Canadian national anthem in Pittsburgh before the Penguins and Flyers rivalry match (and at other arenas later in the week). 3. Zdeno Chara injured

Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has caught some heat for trading away veteran defenseman Johnny Boychuk. Well, his blue line just suffered another costly blow, and this one threatens to seriously set back the struggling Bruins. Team captain and former Norris Trophy winner Zdeno Chara left Thursday's game with a knee injury -- a tear to the posterior cruciate ligament -- that is expected to sideline the hulking defenseman for four to six weeks. A tough start to the season for Claude Julien's club just got a lot tougher, and the East remains wide-open with the Bruins limping out of the gates. Story »

4. Drouin debuts

Although the highly touted Tampa Bay Lightning prospect suffered a setback in the preseason after breaking a thumb during training camp, Jonathan Drouin finally made his long-awaited NHL debut Monday against the Edmonton Oilers. Drouin has just one assist in his first two games, but already people are salivating over the possibilities, especially when he has shared the ice with superstar center Steven Stamkos. There are high hopes for the 2013 third overall pick, and his arrival could not have come at a better time after the injury to the club's top defenseman, Victor Hedman. Story »

5. Predators off to flying start

Few would have predicted the Nashville Predators would be sitting atop the Central Division. Granted, it's early, but there they are, leading the pack after Thursday's 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in which offseason acquisition James Neal recorded a hat trick as the Preds won their second in a row. Give credit to both GM David Poile and new coach Peter Laviolette here. Nashville is off to its best start since the 2010-11 season. Story »
