BOSTON -- Daniel Briere scored his 300th career goal off a rebound with less than a second left in the third period to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Monday.

Jamie McGinn also scored for the Avalanche, who had opened the season with two shutout losses. Backup goalie Reto Berra made 27 saves in his first start of the season.

Loui Eriksson had a power-play goal for the Bruins, who have lost three straight.

Boston backup goalie Niklas Svedberg played his first game of the season and made 28 saves.

The game appeared to be heading to overtime when Svedberg made a pair of stops in the closing minute.

Briere, at the edge of the crease, fired the puck over the sprawling goalie just before time expired after Jan Hejda's shot from the point. The clock read 0.0, but replays showed the puck crossed the goal line before time expired.

DUCKS 5, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- William Karlsson scored his first two NHL goals in leading Anaheim past winless Buffalo.

Ryan Kessler scored on a third-period penalty shot, and Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey each had a goal during a one-sided game in which the Ducks outshot the Sabres 44-12.

The Ducks were so dominant -- and Sabres so inept -- that Anaheim was outshooting Buffalo 40-10 when Kessler beat goalie Michal Neuvirth with a low shot inside the left post with 7:35 remaining.

Frederik Andersen made 11 saves to win his second of the season, matching a career best with his sixth straight victory. Andersen, however, was denied his first shutout when Tyler Ennis scored at 6:36 of the third.

Neuvirth stopped 39 shots in his first start.

LIGHTNING 7, CANADIENS 1

TAMPA, Fla. -- Steven Stamkos scored three goals, defenseman Victor Hedman had a career-high four points and Tampa Bay routed Montreal.

After Stamkos scored on a breakaway off a pass from deep in the defensive zone by Hedman at 13:15 of the second period, the Lightning captain completed the hat trick from the top of the right circle on Tampa Bay's sixth power-play goal this season. That made it 4-1 with 1:46 left in the middle period.

Hedman scored in his third consecutive game finished with a goal and three assists. Ryan Callahan, Ondrej Palat and Vladislav Namestnikov had the other Tampa Bay goals.

Stamkos tied Martin St. Louis for the team record with eight career hat tricks.

Brendan Gallagher scored for the Canadiens, who went 3-1 on a season-opening road trip.

It was the first game between the teams since Montreal completed a first-round playoff sweep last April.

SENATORS 1, PANTHERS 0

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Craig Anderson made 30 saves, Clarke MacArthur scored a power-play goal and Ottawa beat winless Florida in front of the smallest crowd in Panthers history.

MacArthur raced up the middle of the ice past two Panthers defenders and sent a backhander past Roberto Luongo at 15:34 of the second period for Ottawa's second power-play goal in 14 opportunities this season.

That was enough for Anderson, who earned his 27th career shutout to help the Senators finish 2-1 on their season-opening road trip.

The announced crowd of 7,311 -- it appeared much smaller -- in Florida's second home game of the season broke the previous franchise low of 10,063 against Carolina on Oct. 31, 2007.

Luongo, who turned back 22 shots, took his first loss in his last 10 games against Ottawa. He was last beaten by the Senators on Dec. 5, 2005.

Florida (0-2-1) has scored only three goals this season.
