Concussion for top overall draft pick

NHL, Florida Panthers

Aaron Ekblad, the top pick in this year's NHL draft, sustained a concussion in an exhibition game Monday night during Canada's world junior summer development camp, a Team Canada spokesperson confirmed.

A source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Corey Pronman that the injury is not considered a severe one, and that Ekblad is expected to be ready before the Florida Panthers open training camp in September.

"We have been in communication with Team Canada and have mutually agreed to hold Aaron out for the remainder of the summer development camp, as a precautionary measure," Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said in a statement issued to the media. "We will closely monitor Aaron's health for the remainder of the offseason and expect him to be ready for our rookie camp in mid-September."

The 18-year-old defenseman, a standout for the Ontario Hockey League's Barrie Colts last season, is likely to crack the Panthers' roster coming out of camp.
