Jonathan Bernier out 3 weeks

NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs

TORONTO -- The slim playoff hopes of the Toronto Maple Leafs now ride on backup goaltender James Reimer. Top goalie Jonathan Bernier is out a minimum of three weeks with an MCL strain, head coach Randy Carlyle said after practice Friday.

Bernier left Thursday night's 4-3 overtime win over the Boston Bruins in the third period after Toronto defenseman Paul Ranger checked Bruins center Patrice Bergeron into Bernier, who exited the game clearly favoring his left leg. Bernier underwent an MRI Friday morning which confirmed the bad news.

The Leafs lost all five games that Bernier missed with a groin injury last month. Toronto, one point behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final wild-card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, has four regular-season games remaining, including Saturday at home against the Winnipeg Jets.
