TORONTO -- Starting netminder Jonathan Bernier of the Toronto Maple Leafs left Thursday night's 4-3 overtime win against the Boston Bruins with what coach Randy Carlyle later described as a lower-body injury.
Carlyle said the team won't know the severity of the injury until Bernier has an MRI done Friday.
With 11:38 to go in the third period and the Leafs up 3-2 in a game greatly affecting the team's slim playoff hopes, Toronto defenseman Paul Ranger checked Patrice Bergeron into Bernier, with the Bruins' center falling on him.
The Leafs' netminder, arguably Toronto's MVP this season, crumbled to the ice and stayed there a while before exiting the game with the help of a trainer, unable to put pressure on his left leg.
James Reimer replaced Bernier in goal.
Bernier missed five games in late March with a groin injury, Toronto losing all five games.
Winger Joffrey Lupul also missed Thursday's game with a lower-body injury. Carlyle said Lupul is doubtful for Saturday's game versus the Winnipeg Jets.
