DENVER -- Ryan Miller stopped 26 shots, and David Backes broke up a scoreless game in the second period, helping the St. Louis Blues beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 Saturday in a Central Division showdown.
Patrik Berglund added a pivotal insurance goal early in the third period, and the Blues won their fourth straight.
Colorado finally solved Miller midway through the final period when P.A. Parenteau lifted a shot over him while he was trying for his first shutout in nearly two years. Miller is 4-0 since being acquired from Buffalo.
Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon had his point streak snapped at 13 games. It is the NHL's longest streak by an 18-year-old player.
St. Louis improved to a league-best 17-0-1 in division games. The Blues have outscored the Avs 13-5 in taking all three games in the season series.
SENATORS 5, JETS 3
WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Ales Hemsky had three assists in his second game with Ottawa, and the struggling Senators held off Winnipeg.
It was Hemsky's first points for the Senators since he was acquired on Wednesday from Edmonton. He was placed on Ottawa's top line.
Milan Michalek scored the game's first goal during a power play with an assist from Hemsky and center Jason Spezza, who had three assists.
Defensemen Jared Cowen and Eric Gryba, and Kyle Turris and Mike Hoffman also scored for Ottawa, which had lost two straight and four of five.
Turris' goal was his 21st of season, and Hoffman netted his first. Both players also had an assist. Craig Anderson stopped 46 shots for the Senators.
Bryan Little scored his 20th of the season, and Tobias Enstrom and Dustin Byfuglien also had goals for Winnipeg, which has dropped three straight (0-2-1). Ondrej Pavelec started in goal but was replaced in the second period by Al Montoya after giving up five goals on 20 shots.
BRUINS 4, LIGHTNING 3, SO
TAMPA, Fla. -- Reilly Smith scored the lone shootout goal in the seventh round to lead Boston past Tampa Bay.
Smith put an in-close shot between the pads of Ben Bishop. Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask caught a break on Tampa Bay's seventh shootout attempt when Richard Panik hit the post.
The Bruins got regulation goals from Daniel Paille, Carl Soderberg and Johnny Boychuk.
Ondrej Palat, Mark Barberio and Valtteri Filppula scored for the Lightning.
Boston pulled even at 3 when Boychuk snapped a 20-game goal drought 8:11 into the third. The Bruins have outscored their opponents 78-43 during the third period this season.
DEVILS 5, HURRICANES 4
NEWARK, N.J. -- Tuomo Ruutu scored with 6:30 to play against his former teammates, and New Jersey edged Carolina after squandering a three-goal lead.
Adam Henrique added two more goals, and Travis Zajac and Damien Brunner had the others as the usually defensive-minded Devils had another lax game in their own end. Martin Brodeur made 29 saves.
New Jersey has given up 11 goals in two games.
Jeff Skinner, Jay Harrison, Nathan Gerbe and Alexander Semin scored for Carolina, which has lost seven of eight. Gerbe and Semin tallied in the third period to make it 4-4.
Ruutu was acquired by New Jersey from Carolina on Wednesday.
CAPITALS 3, COYOTES 2
WASHINGTON -- Troy Brouwer scored a power-play goal off a rebound to cap a rally from a two-goal deficit in the third period as Washington beat Phoenix.
After failing to score in the first 49 minutes against Mike Smith (30 saves), Washington tallied three times in a span of 5 minutes, 2 seconds. Karl Alzner started the surge with a goal at 9:45. Just 32 seconds later, Brooks Laich tied it on a feed from Jason Chimera.
It was a successful Washington debut for goalie Jaroslav Halak, who made 31 saves. Halak, acquired from Buffalo on Wednesday, helped Washington snap its three-game losing streak.
Brandon McMillan and Radim Vrbata scored for Phoenix, with Keith Yandle assisting on both.
BLUE JACKETS 1, PREDATORS 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Artem Anisimov scored with 6:25 remaining in the third period and Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves to lead Columbus over Nashville.
It was Bobrovsky's third shutout of the season for Columbus, which has won four of five.
The Predators have lost four in a row and seven of eight.
Pekka Rinne stopped 35 shots while making his third consecutive start after being sidelined since late October because of an infection in his hip.
MAPLE LEAFS 4, FLYERS 3, OT
TORONTO -- Joffrey Lupul scored 2:21 into overtime for Toronto, which squandered a third-period lead but bounced back to beat Philadelphia.
Jake Gardiner and Nazem Kadri both had a goal in the game's first four minutes, and Mason Raymond scored the go-ahead goal in the third period for Toronto. Jonathan Bernier made 28 saves for his 24th victory.
Kimmo Timonen scored twice for Philadelphia, and Braydon Coburn tied the game late to force overtime. Steve Mason, who allowed two goals on the first four shots he faced, made 32 saves overall.
STARS 4, WILD 3
DALLAS -- Erik Cole scored on a breakaway with 4:49 to play, and the Dallas Stars rallied to defeat the Minnesota Wild.
Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen was injured in a collision with the Wild's Erik Haula at 6:37 of the third period. Newly acquired goalie Tim Thomas earned the win in his Stars debut in relief.
Haula was given a major penalty for charging and was ejected. Tyler Seguin scored during the 5-minute power play to tie the game 3-3. Four minutes later, Cole picked up a loose puck at center ice and beat goalie Darcy Kuemper.
Jamie Benn and Alex Chiasson also scored for Dallas.
Before the game, the Stars retired Mike Modano's No. 9 in front of a Dallas-record crowd of 19,109.
