Martin St. Louis set for new chapter

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The newest New York Ranger hasn't had much time to reflect on all that has transpired in the past 24 hours.

And quite frankly, Martin St. Louis is just fine with that.

His team is in the middle of a playoff race, after all -- and looking back won't do him any good.

"It happened kinda quick," St. Louis said after Thursday's practice, his first with the team. "I got on the flight, got [to New York], adjusted some of my gear, warmed up and got in the game. You don't really have time to be emotional. We're in the thick of things here. This is a really crucial time of the season. There's not much time to think and reflect.

"I know I will reflect at some point ... probably this summer. Those 14 years were great years for me in Tampa, and this is a new chapter in my life, and I'm excited about it."

The Rangers rank 19th in the league in scoring, so they're hoping St. Louis, 38, can bolster their offense. The six-time All-Star has 369 career goals -- 29 of them this season.

In his New York debut -- playing on a line with former Lightning teammate Brad Richards and Carl Hagelin -- St. Louis registered three shots in 20:11 but was held without a point in a 3-2 overtime loss Wednesday to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Madison Square Garden.

"They're high-quality players," St. Louis said of his linemates. "I'm trying to bring my game and play within their strengths. We had some good looks early on and didn't connect, but I'm encouraged with the first game that we've played together."

St. Louis has played six games in the last eight nights. He's trying to get comfortable with everything -- from his teammates to the system to finding the practice facility.

"It's getting after it, I guess," he said. "There's no dipping the toe in, you gotta jump right in. That's what I'm trying to do."

Many of the Rangers are still trying to get over the loss of captain Ryan Callahan, who was traded for St. Louis.

"Now we've lost our captain," coach Alain Vigneault said. "Some guys have lost a very close friend. I understand the feelings that go with that, but the hangover was yesterday, and it has to be a short one. We've got to move on and build new relationships."
