NFL Combine Buzz: Tuesday Workouts, Press Conferences

The Combine has come to an end and so has our live coverage from Indianapolis. Make sure to check out our NFL Combine/Draft hot corner for updated mock drafts, rankings and analysis between now and the Draft, which begins April 28th.

Peterson's 40 time now an official 4.34 seconds, tied with Maryland running back Da'Rel Scott for 2nd-best time of the 2011 Combine.

Van Dyke's official time of 4.28 is the fastest of the Combine. Rail-thin at 174 pounds, the cornerback was also a track star at Miami. The time is even better than the low-4.3s he said he was hoping to run when we talked to him during his media session.

DeMarcus Van Dyke finishes off consecutive 4.33 40s. Third-best of the day behind Skirne, Peterson.

Jimmy Smith with two impressive runs for a larger cover corner at 4.38 and 4.44. Colorado star is definitely a first-round talent.

Buffalo's Josh Thomas followed up his 4.43 run with a 4.47 run.

After running a 4.29 in his 1st attempt, Buster Skrine stumbled and still managed to hit at 4.36 in his second run.

Top-rated safety Rahim Moore of UCLA with 4.61 and 4.53 40 times.

Justin Rogers from Richmond with an unofficial 4.44, can't be easy being the guy running immediately after Patrick Peterson.

Peterson comes in with a 4.37 40 in his second attempt after the 4.32 his 1st try.

Miami's DeMarcus Van Dyke addding to the run of blazing 40s with a 4.33 unofficial time.

Colorado's Jimmy Smith with a solid 4.38 in his 1st attempt, just .01 off the 4.37 he predicted he'd run.

From way under-the-radar, Tennessee-Chattanooga's Buster Skrine with a week-best unofficial 4.29 40.

Peterson's 1st 40 attempt clocked at an unofficial 4.32 seconds, would be fastest of week if it holds up.

Rutgers' Joe Lefeged opens final group of 40s with a 4.44. Utah State's Curtis March followed with an unofficial 4.46

Just got word that Peterson recorded 38' in the vertical leap earlier. Add that to his 10'6" broad jump and it's safe to say he's having the type of workout everyone expected. Still waiting for him to run the 40 and the big question is if he'll live up to his own expectations of a 4.2.

Patrick Peterson's group getting ready for the 40-yard dash now. Peterson, Colorado's Jimmy Smith and Texas' Aaron Williams are the biggest names in this final group.

Overheard as consecutive defensive backs dropped passes during on-field drills: "Hey, there's a reason these guys aren't wide receivers."

ESPN Insider Chris Sprow on Ohio State DE Cameron Heyward: His problem is the emergence of other guys like Muhammad Wilkerson, and also what I suspect will be a jump in stock for Marvin Austin, who looked good. Heyward is coming off an injury, so he could be a little more limited during this process.

Brandon Harris, a player with 1st-round potential, continues to shine in the on-field drills after clocking an unofficial 4.43 40. "I was born into this game," The Miami product said earlier this week. "I think my love for the game and passion separates me."

Idaho DB Shiloh Keo just provided the top moment of the on-field drills. He completely laid out for a ball and got some noise out of the otherwise sleepy on-lookers. We spoke to Keo yesterday and he was a great kid. Very personable and committed to showing teams that he has a lot of heart and can contribute on special teams.

LSU's Patrick Peterson just checked in with a 10'6" in the broad jump.

Miami CB Brandon Harris is getting rave reviews from Prime Time himself, Deion Sanders. Harris is flying all over the field and killing it in the on-field drills. He also ran an unofficial 4.43 40-yard dash.

First group of defensive backs have completed the 40-yard dash and they are on to the field drills. Second group will begin shortly including LSU's Patrick Peterson.

Virginia's Ras-I Dowling was skipped in his final 40 attempt due to a pulled hamstring. He turned in a 4.44 unofficially in his first attempt.

Ohio State DB Chimdi Chekwa lights it up with an unofficial 4.33. Other noteables: Mario Butler -- 4.65, Rashad Carmichael -- 4.53, Quinton Carter -- 4.63, Ras-I Dowling -- 4.44, Ahmad Black -- 4.74, Kendric Burney -- 4.72.

From ESPN Insider Chris Sprow: Notable is that Ras-I Dowling, for much of the year among the top three corners for Mel Kiper, ran a 4.44, but also pulled up with an apparent hamstring issue. He had injury issues all season, and now looks like a guy who could fall to as late as the third round if he can't eliminate those concerns, which seems hard to imagine.

Prince rolls an unofficial 4.44 in his 2nd 40-yard dash attempt. ESPN Insider Chris Sprow says if this sticks, he can assure himself of a top-10 grade.

Nebraska's Prince Amukamara just dropped a 4.37 in the 40, unofficially. Huge performance. Patrick Peterson -- your turn.

Everyone in Indy is still buzzing over the news that broke late last night that Julio Jones posted that beast-like workout on a fractured foot. It's shocking when you think about it. He ran a 4.39 on a busted wheel. Dude is insane.

Colorado's Jimmy Smith had the most specific 40 prediction of the week saying he would run a 4.37 40 in Indy because that's what he's clocked at electronically in the past.

After Von Miller made a clear statement that a linebacker belongs in the top 5 of this defensive line-heavy draft, Peterson could do the same thing for his own stock today. At 222 pounds, many scouts believe the cornerback could be an All-Pro safety in the NFL but he still has the speed to hit the high-4.2s or low-4.3s on the track today.

There are three projected first-round cornerbacks in this draft in top-ranked LSU product Patrick Peterson, Nebraska's Prince Amukamara and Colorado coverman Jimmy Smith. The top rated pair, Peterson and Amukamara had glowing things to say about each other during their Combine media sessions.

"Me and Prince, we're definitely tight," Peterson said. "We met up in Orlando and we exchanged numbers. He's excited, and I'm excited, to perform, and for April 28."

"Patrick Peterson is an amazing player, and whatever attention or notoriety he's getting, he deserves," Amukamara said when asked of any rivalry between the pair.

Miami's Demarcus Van Dyke is among the less-talked about cornerbacks hoping to make a name for himself with a strong performance today. The Hurricanes speedster spent 3 years on the Miami track team and has run a 10.4 100-meter dash.

Tuesday marks the last day of the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine and some of the fastest 40-yard times of the week figure to come from the defensive backs taking the field here in Indianapolis today.
