Matt Flynn is the Oakland Raiders' quarterback of the present. Terrelle Pryor might be the team's future at the position but coach Dennis Allen said Monday "he's not there yet."
"There's been no lack of effort on his part. I think still, when you look at it at the quarterback position, he's still young in the position," Allen said. "There's still a lot of improvement that he needs to make. He's got a great athletic skill set, but still some of the finer points of playing the quarterback position are still some of the things that he's got to continue to get better at."
Pryor, who will turn 24 in June, got onto the field for a few plays late last season in relief of starter Carson Palmer before finally getting the chance to start in the final game at San Diego with Palmer sidelined by cracked ribs and a bruised lung.
Pryor went 13-for-28 for 150 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 24-21 loss to the Chargers. He also ran for 49 yards and a score and looked more than capable of running the offense.
Allen said in-game experience should help Pryor's development, "but again, at the end of the day, everything we do is being evaluated."
"So we watch every single practice snap so I think we have a pretty good idea of where we're at. We're going to continue to give him opportunities to showcase his skills, but right now, he's not there yet," he said.
Also Monday, Allen confirmed that the Raiders won't get first-round pick D.J. Hayden back on the field until training camp.
Hayden attended practice but remains sidelined after undergoing surgery to remove scar tissue from his abdominal region.
"It's a little bit of uncharted waters but we still feel comfortable that he'll be back and ready to go in camp," Allen said.
Hayden had surgery last November to repair a tear of the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body to the heart. He was hurt in a practice collision at Houston. Doctors had to cut through Hayden's sternum to save him.
Raiders doctors cleared Hayden and the team selected him 12th overall in April's draft.
