Detroit Lions second-round pick Darius Slay underwent arthroscopic knee surgery for a torn meniscus Friday and will not take part in the team's rookie minicamp, which begins this Friday, according to a league source.
Doctors discovered the knee injury was not a severe issue and they believe he could play in 10 days if he had to, the source said.
Slay will be ready for training camp, per a league source.
The Lions took Slay with the No. 36 overall pick, making him the first cornerback they have drafted in either the first or second round since selecting Terry Fair in 1998. General manager Martin Mayhew told reporters after Slay was drafted that the Lions had a first-round grade on the cornerback, despite his injury.
Mayhew said he was "very comfortable" with Slay's prognosis and coach Jim Schwartz said the injury isn't long-term. Slay is expected to compete with the Lions' 2012 trio of drafted cornerbacks -- Bill Bentley, Chris Greenwood and Jonte Green -- to start alongside Chris Houston.
Slay is known for his speed. He ran the fastest 40 time among cornerbacks at the NFL scouting combine, at 4.36 seconds.
