Cornerback Chris Gamble, who was released last week by the Carolina Panthers, has informed his agent that he plans to retire.
Agent Carl Poston told ESPN's Josina Anderson about his client's decision Monday.
"A number of teams have expressed interest in Chris Gamble," Poston said. "However, Chris informed me last night that he wants to retire. Even though he still loves football, he told me that he's decided to focus on life after football.
"Chris has been a class act. I have represented him for nine years, ever since he came out of Ohio State. He's been an ideal client and he was one of the best corners in game. He's doing it the right way. He has taken care of his money and his investments to retire successfully, and now I wish him the best in his future endeavors."
The Panthers saved $7.9 million under this year's salary cap Friday by releasing Gamble, who missed most of last season with a torn labrum in his shoulder.
The former first-round pick has played his entire career with the Panthers, who selected Gamble with the 28th overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Ohio State.
He played in 123 career regular-season games with 117 starts and is the franchise's leader with 27 career interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns. He has started more games for the Panthers than any cornerback in franchise history.
