Sources: Tim Walton to be Rams' DC

The St. Louis Rams plan to hire Tim Walton as their new defensive coordinator, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Walton will come to the Rams after serving as the Lions' defensive backs coach since 2009. The Rams tried to hire Walton as a defensive assistant last season before be opted to stay with the Lions.

The Rams had flirted with hiring former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who wound up in New Orleans.

Last season, the Rams' defense was coached by a host of assistants after defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was suspended by the NFL for his role in the Saints' bounty scandal. Williams, who has since been reinstated by the NFL, was hired as assistant head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
