Anthony Spencer willing to play DE

NFL, Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys' switch from a 3-4 standard defense to a 4-3 formation could mean a potential position change for outside linebacker Anthony Spencer.

Jordan Woy, Spencer's agent, said Sunday his client is open to moving to defensive end.

"He can play either," Woy said. "They played a 4-3 for some of the snaps this past season."

Spencer was a defensive end at Purdue before he was selected by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2007 draft. Spencer's ability to play both positions makes him a marketable player because he'll become a free agent in March.

Spencer is coming off a season where he had a career-high 11 sacks. The Cowboys placed the franchise tag on Spencer, costing them $8.8 million in 2012.

Spencer could get franchised again, a move that would cost Dallas $10.6 million in 2013. But the Cowboys are currently over the salary cap by roughly $18 million, and several decisions would have to be made before either franchising Spencer again or working out a long-term deal.
