FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has signed a contract extension to stay with the team through next season, coach Mike Smith announced Wednesday.
Earlier Wednesday, the team announced on Twitter that Koetter, a candidate for some of the seven NFL head-coaching vacancies, had pulled himself out of consideration for any of the openings.
Koetter, 53, interviewed for the Kansas City Chiefs' opening on Tuesday. His name also surfaced as a candidate in Cleveland and Philadelphia.
Koetter joined the Falcons on Jan. 15, 2012, after spending five seasons with the Jaguars.
He oversaw an offense that ranked second in third-down efficiency, seventh in scoring and fewest sacks allowed and eighth in total yards. The Falcons finished 13-3, tied with Denver for the NFL's best record, powered by an attack that finished eighth in total offense.
Quarterback Matt Ryan set a franchise record with 32 touchdown passes and both Roddy White (1,351) and Julio Jones (1,198) finished with more than 1,000 yards receiving.
Ryan added Wednesday that Koetter "does a great job in putting all of our guys in position to succeed."
