With David Akers struggling, the San Francisco 49ers are bringing in kickers for workouts, including Billy Cundiff and Justin Medlock, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Monday.
Akers, a six-time Pro Bowler, missed wide left on a 44-yard field goal attempt midway through the second quarter of Sunday's 27-13 victory against the Arizona Cardinals, then did it again with nearly the same kick -- from 40 yards this time -- 24 seconds before halftime. Akers put his hands on his knees and closed his eyes in frustration as boos rained down from the sellout crowd at Candlestick Park.
Akers missed for the fourth time in his last eight tries spanning three games and his 13th time in 40 tries after setting an NFL single-season record with 44 field goals in 52 attempts last year. Akers bounced back Sunday by nailing one from 43 yards early in the second half but was later clipped in his kicking foot by Arizona's Justin Bethel. Akers stayed in the game, then booted a 26-yard field goal with just more than 9 minutes remaining.
After the game, coach Jim Harbaugh didn't rule out a change at kicker.
"We'll evaluate that," he said. "It's his job to make the kicks."
Cundiff was cut by the Washington Redskins in October after making just 7-of-12 field goal attempts. His 58.3 percentage was last among NFL kickers at the time.
Cundiff's range has always been in question. He is 5 for 21 in his career from 50-plus yards, including 1 for 8 since the start of last season.
He is most remembered, however, for missing a potential game-tying, 32-yarder against the New England Patriots in the waning seconds of last season's AFC title game.
Medlock was waived by the Carolina Panthers in November. He started the season 7 of 7 before having a kick blocked against Washington. He then missed field goals against Denver and Tampa Bay before being waived and replaced by free agent Graham Gano.
The NFC West champion Niners are the No. 2 seed in the NFC. They will host a divisional-round game Jan. 12.
