Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald said Monday that although his father believes the team has quit on its season, that's not the case.
The star receiver gave his take on the 4-9 Cardinals during his weekly radio appearance on Dial Global Radio after his father, Larry Fitzgerald Sr., had earlier shared his opinions on Twitter following Arizona's 58-0 loss at Seattle.
Fitzgerald said the Cardinals would "never" quit.
"We're professionals. That will never happen," Fitzgerald said in the interview. "We're going to continue to play. We're going to continue to practice. We're going to continue to prepare every week like we would if we had won nine games in a row. That's not going to change. We're not going to quit."
Fitzgerald said he's in a "unique situation" because his father is a sports writer who is not shy about sharing his opinions.
"He's making an observation based on what he sees and what he feels and that's his opinion. I don't share in those same feelings and that's where I stand on that," he said.
Embattled Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, meanwhile, was assured of his job security for the remainder of the season Monday when team president Michael Bidwill said a decision on whether Whisenhunt remains as coach will be made after the season.
Bidwill said the team's 58-point loss to the Seahawks on Sunday was "unacceptable" and that he has been evaluating the situation on a week-to-week basis. Arizona's losing streak has grown to nine games.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Cardinals are the first team in NFL history to start a season 4-0, then lose nine straight.
"I think not making a rush decision is the right way to go," Bidwill said Monday in his first comments on the matter.
Fitzgerald's All-Pro talents are being wasted with the Cardinals' unsettled quarterback situation, and with just three games left in the season, his streak of 1,000-yard seasons is in jeopardy of ending at five. Fitzgerald, who had one catch for 2 yards in Sunday's loss, has just 652 yards this season. Fitzgerald has 11, 31, 23 and 2 yards in his past four games and just six catches in that span.
The 29-year-old Fitzgerald, who signed an eight-year, $120 million contract in 2011, hasn't publicly criticized his quarterbacks' play and he made it clear Monday that he doesn't want to leave the Cardinals.
"I enjoy playing for the Arizona Cardinals and I want to continue to play here and try to win," he said.
