Free-agent running back Cedric Benson is in Green Bay and is expected to sign with the Packers, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Benson, 29, spent the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, rushing for more than 1,000 yards each of the past three years. His best season came in 2009, when Benson ran for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns.

The fourth overall pick out of Texas in the 2005 draft, Benson spent his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears.

The Packers did not re-sign veteran free agent Ryan Grant in the offseason, leaving James Starks as the most experienced member of a young backfield.

Starks, Marc Tyler and Alex Green saw carries in Green Bay's preseason opener Thursday night, a 21-13 loss in San Diego.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
