INDIANAPOLIS -- Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III ran the fastest 40-yard dash by a quarterback Sunday at this year's NFL scouting combine with an official time of 4.41.
Griffin was unofficially clocked with a two-run average of 4.38 seconds before his official time was released later Sunday. Andrew Luck, the Heisman runner-up and favorite to be the No. 1 pick, later ran twice, getting clocked unofficially at 4.66 and 4.59.
Luck's official time was 4.67.
Griffin is the only quarterback other than Michael Vick to run faster than 4.4 at the combine (Vick was clocked at 4.33 seconds), according to ESPN Scouts Inc.'s Steve Muench. His time is impressive considering the average for quarterbacks over the last four combines was 4.90 and Cam Newton clocked 4.59 last year.
Luck put his versatility on display Sunday. His broad jump (10 feet, 4 inches) was two inches short of Newton's best in 2011, and Luck's vertical jump (36 inches) was better than Newton's (35). Griffin was better than Luck in the vertical jump (39 inches) but fell short in the broad jump (10 feet).
Griffin and Luck both skipped Sunday's throwing drills as planned, opting instead to do that with familiar receivers in a familiar environment during Pro Day workouts.
The best overall time Sunday was a 4.36, turned in by receivers Stephen Hill of Georgia Tech, Travis Benjamin of Miami and Chris Owusu of Stanford.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Hill had been unofficially timed at 4.30. Other big receivers also impressed with their times as Notre Dame's Michael Floyd (6-3, 220) ran the 40 in 4.47 and Miami's Tommy Streeter (6-5, 219) finished in 4.40.
Justin Blackmon, the No. 1 ranked receiver in this draft class, ran the gauntlet -- a drill in which players must catch balls thrown quickly in succession. Blackmon sat out the 40, as expected, after he said he hurt his hamstring last week.
Miami's Lamar Miller was the fastest running back in the 40 with an official time of 4.40. Chris Rainey of Florida, LaMichael James of Oregon and Ronnie Hillman of San Diego State each posted times of 4.45.
Defensive linemen and linebackers will work out Monday.
