Free-agent QB Daniel to Redskins

NFL, NFL Draft, College Football, Washington Redskins, Missouri Tigers

Former Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel has signed a free-agent deal with the Washington Redskins after going undrafted this weekend despite remaining in contention for the Heisman Trophy during much of his senior season.

Daniel, who was a Heisman finalist in 2007, told The Kansas City Star that he would leave his home in Southlake, Texas, near Forth Worth on Thursday for the Redskins' weekend minicamp.

"Chris Meidt was the guy that worked me out at the combine, and he really liked me," Daniel said of the Redskins assistant coach. "I talked to [head] coach [Jim] Zorn a couple of times. I'm excited about the opportunity they presented."

Another former Big 12 quarterback, Texas Tech's Graham Harrell, will participate in the Cleveland Browns' rookie minicamp set for this weekend, according to The Dallas Morning News.

It was unclear if Harrell had agreed to a contract with the team.

Other undrafted rookies to sign included Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson with the Atlanta Falcons, Texas receiver Quan Cosby with the Cincinnati Bengals and Boise State running back Ian Johnson, who will join the Minnesota Vikings.

Daniel will be added to a Redskins roster that includes starter Jason Campbell, veteran Todd Collins and second-year player Colt Brennan out of Hawaii.

"They have three quarterbacks, and any three can make the team," Daniel said, according to The Star. "I'm excited about what's going to happen."

The Browns are four deep at quarterback, with Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn, Brett Ratliff and Richard Bartel on their roster. Ratliff was acquired in a trade with the New York Jets that allowed them to draft former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.

In 2008, Daniel led Missouri to its second straight appearance in the Big 12 championship game. He finished his Missouri career as the Tigers' all-time leader in passing attempts (1,609), completions (1,094), completion percentage (68.0), passing yards (12,515), touchdown passes (101), and nearly a dozen other categories.

After the 2008 season, he was chosen to participate in the East-West Shrine Game, where he started for the winning East team. But he was just 2-of-9 passing for one yard.

The Redskins also agreed to terms with 12 other undrafted free agents: tight end Robert Agnone of Delaware, offensive lineman Scott Burley of Maryland, defensive tackle Antonio Dixon of Miami, cornerback Doug Dutch of Michigan, tight end Devin Frischknecht of Washington State, receiver John Halman of Concordia, defensive tackle Brigham Harwell of UCLA, safety Lendy Holmes of Oklahoma, linebacker Ronnie Palmer of Arizona, defensive end Derek Walker of Illinois, offensive lineman Edwin Williams of Maryland and receiver Jaison Williams of Oregon.

The Redskins also announced the signing of punter Hunter Smith, who agreed to terms last week.
