Building blocks

Chicago Bears

With their second-to-last pick (No. 246), the Bears went back to offense. They took tight end Lance Louis from San Diego State, who is actually listed in draft guides as a guard at 6 feet 2 inches, 303 pounds. But Louis should be used in Chicago primarily as a blocking tight end if he makes the team.

Drafting Louis certainly is an attempt to turn up the heat on Kellen Davis, who failed to convert on several key blocking assignments in his rookie year. If nothing else, having Louis in camp will force Davis to concentrate on improving the blocking aspect of his game.

Louis played tight end, tackle and guard during his time in the Aztecs program. He missed all of 2006 due to a torn ACL.
