Beanie Wells eats into Tim Hightower's value

The NFC champion Cardinals took Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells with the 31st pick in the first round, which puts a major crimp in the plans of Tim Hightower's fantasy owners. Wells is a 235-pound tailback who is the most punishing runner in this draft, meaning he basically does everything Hightower does, only a little bit better. Now, Beanie had durability problems in college, so that'll be a concern. And there's the fact that the Cardinals don't really run much. How will the Cardinals split just 21 carries per game (fewest in the league) between these two players? Wells is a wear-you-down kind of guy, and Arizona just doesn't play that kind of football. That said, he's a pretty clear upgrade over Hightower, who really struggled after he took over Arizona's starting backfield spot last year. This also means that I can officially state the obvious: Edgerrin James will most certainly not be back in the desert in '09. Now, it's really tough to say whether Wells or Hightower will be the favorite for goal-line carries; they're both big, they're both plow horses, they both could do the touchdown-making job. Wells is definitely in the fantasy conversation, but certainly not to the extent he'd have been if he'd gone to Indianapolis.
