Hakeem Nicks has outside shot at 2009 value

I had the Giants taking wideout Hakeem Nicks of the University of North Carolina when I did my first mock draft back in February, so I'm not surprised to see them take Nicks with the 29th pick in the first round. Now, this isn't a burner of a player. He might not even have Plaxico Burress speed. But Plax was never what you'd consider a deep burner, either, so that doesn't worry me that much. Nicks also isn't a huge, Larry Fitzgerald-style player. But he's got incredible ball skills, he's a good route-runner, he's a willing downfield blocker, and he can be a factor in the end zone, where Burress was such a stud. This is a very nice pick, and I wouldn't expect anything less from GM Jerry Reese. For our purposes, the question is: Can Nicks be the exception to the regular rule about rookie receivers in fantasy leagues? I tend to think not. I do think he'll get a chance to compete with the other young receivers on this roster, guys like Domenik Hixon, Mario Manningham and Sinorice Moss, all of whom are vying to be a starting outside receiver. (Steve Smith seems likely to be their slot guy.) But I still think Hixon has a head start on the rest of this field. He faded down the stretch last year, it's true, but he flashed in '08 for sure. Nicks will be someone worth watching in camp, and if he winds up a starter, it means he's ready to contribute to your fantasy team right away. I'm just a little bit skeptical he'll wind up a starter in Week 1.
