Percy Harvin pick all about upside

The Vikings eschewed concerns about their "Love Boat" past and took Percy Harvin with the 22nd pick of the '09 draft. There's no question that Harvin is a sure-handed, unbelievably quick player whose upside is as one of the NFL's elite game-changers. The issues about Harvin have all been off-field. He had multiple suspensions in high school, has some durability questions, and tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine, which makes it relatively surprising that Minnesota would do this. Still, from a fantasy perspective, Harvin has the potential to be big. Instantly, he becomes one of the five quickest players in the NFL, and he's a better route-runner than you're used to University of Florida wideouts being. Harvin should be a special teams star right away, as the Vikings haven't had a big-time returner for years, and it's not like former Day 1 pick Sidney Rice covered himself in glory last season opposite Bernard Berrian. If he stays out of trouble, if he dedicates himself to becoming an NFL player and if he can get on the field, Harvin will be a fantasy factor in 2009. It might be as a Wildcat quarterback. It might be as a slot man. It might be as a change-of-pace third-down player in the backfield. But as soon as this year, Harvin can be a better version of Devin Hester.
