Toss-up: Murphy vs. Inglesias

Let's paint a hypothetical situation; When the Bears go on the clock Saturday night at pick No. 49, Brian Robiskie, Kenny Britt, Mohamed Massaquoi and Hakeem Nicks are all off the board. What does Jerry Angelo do? Judging by reader response, it seems a large chunk of Bears' fans covet either Florida wide receiver Louis Murphy or Oklahoma wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias. Let's take a closer look at each, using Angelo's ice cream analogy as our measuring stick.

Murphy is the "sprinkles" or the "twist". He's got an incredible size-to-speed ratio (6-2, 203/4.32). Murphy is a tremendous athlete who has shown the ability to make tough catches. However, his productivity was marginal, partly due to playing second fiddle to Percy Harvin.

2007: 37 catches, 548 yds., 5 touchdowns
2008: 38-655-7

A big red flag could be Murphy's weakness as a blocker. The Bears are still a running football team, so blocking is a pre-requisite for a receiver.

Iglesias is the vanilla cone (full disclosure; I like vanilla, so I don't mean this as an insult to Iglesias). He might not have the same front line speed (4.54), but Iglesias is a much more physical player, a guy who can work inside the numbers. He also put up some big statistics the last two years in Norman, but is regarded as more of a possession-type receiver in the NFL.

2007: 68-907-5
2008: 74-1,150-10

My take: If Murphy and Iglesias are the best two receivers sitting on the board at No. 49, go with defense. Take a big, physical safety or corner. You can always address receiver later in the draft.
