Michigan Tech held a slim 16-14 lead midway through the first half, but reserve guard Kevin Maloney hit four straight shots, including three 3-pointers, to score all 11 of his points in a 2:22 stretch that pushed the Huskies lead to 27-18. The Huskies then ended the first half on a 15-3 run to build a comfortable cushion.
Dorien Brown had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Gamecocks and Will Ginn added 13 points.
The win was Michigan Techs first against a Division I school since 1989 when it defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
