Race promoter killed in raceway accident

AutoRacing

ELMA, Wash. -- Racing at the Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma
was canceled Saturday, following the death of race promoter Fred
Brownfield, track officials said.

Brownfield died during an accident at the track Friday night,
his family confirmed in a statement posted on a Web site for the
National Sprint Tour. He was struck by a car while lining up
vehicles before the main race of the Shipwreck Beads Northwest
Modified Nationals, track officials said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for the Elma Police Department said police were
investigating the accident.

Brownfield, a former World of Outlaws driver, was named the
group's promoter of the year in 2005. He started the Northern
Sprint Tour in 1996 and began the National Sprint Tour this season.

A memorial service was scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 26 at Grays
Harbor Raceway.
