Tigers release pitcher Knotts

Detroit Tigers: Pitcher Gary Knotts was released and pitcher Sean Douglass was claimed off waivers Monday by the Indians.

Right-hander Knotts did not pitch last season because of a sore right shoulder after going 7-6 in 36 games -- including 19 starts -- with a 5.25 ERA in 2004. In three-plus seasons with Detroit and Florida, Knotts is 13-16 with a 5.45 ERA.

Douglass, also a right-hander, was 5-5 last season with a 5.56 ERA in 16 starts and two relief appearances. He has a 7-13 record with a 6.11 ERA with Detroit, Toronto and Baltimore.

Clearing waivers were right-handed pitchers Matt Ginter and
Jason Karnuth, left-handed pitchers Doug Creek and Vic Darensbourg and infielder Kevin Hooper. The Tigers outrighted their contracts to Triple-A Toledo. Creek, Darensbourg, Ginter, Karnuth and Hooper elected to become free agents.

Seattle Mariners: The team assigned the contract of outfielder Jaime Bubela to Triple-A Tacoma.

Bubela was called up from Double-A San Antonio on Sept. 13 and played in 11 games with the Mariners. He went 2-for-19 with two singles, batting .105.

At San Antonio this season, he stole a career-high 40 bases in 46 attempts, the fourth-highest total in the Texas League. He hit .292, with 20 doubles, five triples, nine home runs and 57 RBI in 130 games.
