Kawann Short reports for physical after skipping voluntary workouts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short was at Bank of America Stadium on Monday when physicals were given for a three-day mandatory minicamp that begins on Tuesday, a league source said.

Short skipped the past two weeks of voluntary workouts as discussions between his representation and the Panthers on a long-term deal stalled.

Short still could skip the minicamp that runs Tuesday through Thursday, but that would cost him about $76,000.

Carolina coach Ron Rivera said last week that he wasn't concerned and that he expected Short to report for the mandatory camp. He also sounded somewhat bothered that Short wasn't there.

"The thing I appreciate, for most part, everybody has told me what's been going on with the exception of one person," Rivera said of players that have missed sessions.

Short is entering the last year of his rookie deal. Carolina general manager Dave Gettleman has made it clear signing Short to an extension is a priority, but so far that hasn't happened.

Short's 11 sacks in 2015 led Carolina and tied for the NFL lead among defensive tackles. He is in line to be paid among the top five tackles in the NFL, which likely would be between $13 million and $16 million a year.

Short is scheduled to count $1,473,289 against the 2016 salary cap.
