The Detroit Lions are clearly seeking some help at wide receiver.
The franchise signed veteran Andre Roberts on Monday morning, and former Pro Bowl receiver Anquan Boldin is visiting the club Monday, sources told ESPN Insider Adam Schefter.
The Lions are still trying to replenish a receiver corps that lost star Calvin Johnson to retirement in March and did not re-sign Lance Moore. The Lions signed Marvin Jones in free agency to go along with Golden Tate as their two likely starters, but depth beyond that has been an issue.
TJ Jones leads the way as a top backup option, and he has been one of the few healthy options for Detroit during organized team activities. Jeremy Kerley, who was signed in free agency, has sat out multiple organized team activities, and Corey Fuller is out indefinitely after foot surgery.
The Lions also signed Andre Caldwell and, after not drafting any receivers this year, picked up Jay Lee and Quinshad Davis as undrafted free agents.
In Roberts, the Lions get a veteran with 229 career catches for 2,711 yards and 13 touchdowns. His production has waned in each of the past four seasons between Arizona and Washington, including 11 catches for 135 yards and zero touchdowns last season. He will likely be viewed as a receiver who can play both inside and in the slot.
Boldin has familiarity with Lions coach Jim Caldwell from their Super Bowl-winning season together in Baltimore in 2012. The 6-foot-1 Boldin has 1,009 career catches for 13,195 yards and 74 touchdowns. He posted 1,000-yard seasons in 2013 and 2014 and had 789 yards receiving last season.
If the Lions were to sign him, he would give Detroit some flexibility with Tate, who can play on both the outside and in the slot if necessary.
