WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. -- Despite missing all of the Detroit Lions' offseason workouts, running back Ameer Abdullah is expected to be back by the beginning of training camp, general manager Bob Quinn said Monday.
Abdullah sat out workouts after having surgery on the labrum in his shoulder in January. He has been in Detroit during the team's two organized team activities but has not participated as he recovers from the surgery.
Quinn said Monday that he was "not at all" concerned about Abdullah's shoulder being a long-term issue. Lions coach Jim Caldwell said last month that Abdullah was recovering "nicely."
Abdullah, the team's second-round pick in 2015, rushed for 597 yards last season and returned kicks. He is part of a backfield that includes Theo Riddick, Stevan Ridley, Zach Zenner and George Winn.
Seventh-round pick Dwayne Washington has not been at any open OTA practices because the University of Washington was still in school.
While the Lions expect Abdullah back for the start of camp, tight end Brandon Pettigrew might not be.
"Probably not at the beginning of training camp," Quinn said. "That's something that we'll evaluate as we get into the early part of camp."
Pettigrew, one of the team's two first-round picks in 2009, tore his ACL against the Rams in December and has not participated in any workouts. Eric Ebron also has sat out the two open OTAs with an injury, and Tim Wright is on injured reserve with a torn ACL.
Quinn said "anything's possible" when asked whether the team would bring in another veteran tight end.
