Back issues may sideline DeMarcus Ware from Broncos' OTAs

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said Tuesday that with outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware's back troubles flaring again, the team will consider holding Ware out of the remainder of its organized team activities and mandatory minicamp.

Ware was held out of last week's practices -- the first set of OTAs -- and was held out again Tuesday as the defending Super Bowl champions began their second set of OTAs.

"Same thing, back's bothering him," Kubiak said after practice.

Kubiak added: "I don't know how much you'll see him in OTAs. Hopefully we get him a few [practices] in before we call it a summer, but there's no reason to rush him out here. ... We'll see."

The Broncos' mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 7-9, and their final set of OTAs could potentially be held the week after. Then the team will away from the facility until the start of training camp.

Ware missed five games last season because of back troubles; he dealt with back and neck issues earlier in his career as well. After he returned from injury last season, Ware was effective in the Broncos' postseason run with 1.5 sacks and eight hits on opposing quarterbacks in three playoff games.

This offseason, as he transitions to more of a pass-rush specialist from full-time play, Ware agreed to reduce his salary for the coming season with a contract restructure that now includes incentives for eight, nine, 11 or 13 sacks.

Kubiak said Tuesday that Ware has been working with the team's strength and conditioning coach, Luke Richesson, as well as head trainer Steve Antonopulos.
