Seahawks put RB Marshawn Lynch on reserve/retired list

The Marshawn Lynch era in Seattle is officially over.

The running back announced his retirement during the Super Bowl in February, but he remained on the Seahawks' roster until Thursday, when the team announced it had placed him on the reserve/retired list.

Lynch's contract originally carried a cap hit of $11.5 million for 2016, but with this transaction, that number shrinks to $5 million, essentially creating $6.5 million in cap space for the Seahawks.

The past three months have been eventful for Lynch. He went to Egypt as part of the American Football Without Barriers program. He hung out with Bill Clinton in Oakland. And he joined Cliff Avril on a trip to Haiti, where they built an elementary school, hosted a mobile medical clinic and ran a youth football camp.

Lynch has been among the most productive running backs in the league since 2011, his first full season with the Seahawks after arriving from the Buffalo Bills in a midseason trade the year before. During those five seasons, Lynch finished third in rushing yards (5,774), second in first downs (294) and first in rushing touchdowns. His 51 touchdowns surpassed Adrian Peterson's second-place total by six.

His six 100-yard playoff games fall short of only Terrell Davis and Emmitt Smith in NFL history.

In his nine-year career, Lynch has started 114 games and carried 2,144 times for 9,112 yards and 74 touchdowns (4.3 YPC).
