Chiefs extend deals of RBs Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware

NFL, Kansas City Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Running backs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware combined to rush for more than 1,000 yards for the Kansas City Chiefs last season after they lost Jamaal Charles for the year with a torn ACL.

The Chiefs rewarded both players Thursday by signing them to contract extensions. Details of the contracts were not immediately available.

"Charcandrick and Spencer both stepped in and were very effective for us offensively last year," Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said. "These guys have different styles and abilities, and together they provide us quality depth at the running back position."

The Chiefs have said they expect Charles back at full strength for the start of training camp in July.

West rushed for 634 yards and four touchdowns and Ware 403 yards and six touchdowns last season. Their play was crucial for the Chiefs as they overcame a 1-5 start to win their final 10 games and claim a wild-card playoff spot.

Both players joined the Chiefs under humble circumstances. West was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014 out of tiny Abilene Christian. Ware was signed by the Chiefs at the end of the 2014 season after being released by the Seattle Seahawks.
