Jaguars sign CB Prince Amukamara to one-year deal

NFL, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The JaguarsĀ on Friday added a second free agent to their secondary as they signed former New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara to a one-year deal.

Amukamara is the third defensive free agent signed by the Jaguars this week. They signed defensive tackle Malik Jackson and safety Tashaun Gipson on Wednesday.

The Jaguars need the help. They have posted the first-, second- and fifth-worst scoring defenses in the past three seasons. In addition, they've recorded the fewest interceptions in the NFL over that span (26).

Jacksonville is looking for a cornerback to start opposite Davon House, which would allow Aaron ColvinĀ to slide inside, where he thrives.

Amukamara was the Giants' first-round pick in 2011 out of Nebraska. Injuries limited his ability to contribute to that year's Super Bowl-winning team and have persisted throughout his career.

Only once in five seasons (2013) has Amukamara been able to play a full 16-game regular-season schedule. In 2015, he missed five games with a pectoral injury and was not fully healthy upon his return.

Known as a technically sound cover corner who can handle receivers physically at the line, Amukamara has struggled to show consistent speed and playmaking ability.

He has had more than one interception in a season (in 2014, when he had three) only once, and his career total through five years is seven.

Amukamara will turn 27 on June 6.
