Eagles have busy, productive start to free agency

NFL, Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs

The Eagles shed unwanted contracts, moved into the top-10 of the NFL draft, picked up a starting safety, upgraded their offensive line and added a couple backups.

Day 1 of the free-agency period was quite productive for Philadelphia.

The Eagles finalized a trade with Miami that sends cornerback Byron Maxwell, linebacker Kiko Alonso and the 13th overall pick in this year's draft for the eighth overall pick.

They also completed a deal to send 2014 NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray to Tennessee along with a fourth-round pick for the Titans' fourth-round pick, moving up 13 spots in that round.

The trades gave Philadelphia an extra $10 million under the salary cap. The team used some of that money to add safety Rodney McLeod, guard Brandon Brooks and cornerback Ron Brooks.

The Eagles also agreed on a three-year with quarterback Chase Daniel, according to a person familiar with negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical and wasn't officially announced.

McLeod started every game for St. Louis the past three seasons after the Rams signed him as an undrafted rookie in 2012. He has five career interceptions, seven forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

McLeod became the second starter added to the secondary in two days. The Eagles signed longtime Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin on Tuesday.

Brandon Brooks started 44 games for Houston the past three seasons after being drafted in the third round in 2012. The 6-foot-5, 343-pound Brooks fills a big hole on Philadelphia's offensive line. He's played mostly right guard in his career.

Ron Brooks spent his four seasons in Buffalo. He started three games and played a key role on special teams.

Brooks and McKelvin played for Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz when he held the same role in Buffalo in 2014.

Daniel spent the past three seasons backing up Alex Smith in Kansas City, where new Eagles coach Doug Pederson was the offensive coordinator. Daniel's addition likely means Mark Sanchez won't return to play behind Sam Bradford. The Eagles signed Bradford to a two-year deal last week.

The 29-year-old Daniel played his first three seasons with New Orleans and last three for the Chiefs. He is 1-1 in two career starts.

Murray, Alonso and Maxwell were part of Chip Kelly's roster overhaul last March. After going 10-6 in his first two seasons as coach, Kelly took control of personnel decisions from then-general manager Howie Roseman and made drastic changes. They backfired. The Eagles went 7-9 and Kelly was fired with one game left in the season.

Kelly ended up in San Francisco, Pederson replaced Kelly and Roseman is back in charge in the front office.
