Vikings plan to retain LT Matt Kalil

NFL, Minnesota Vikings

Left tackle Matt Kalil won't be a salary-cap casualty, as the Vikings plan to retain the former No. 4 overall pick despite his fifth-year option of $11.1 million and inconsistent play, according to a league source.

Kalil played at a Pro Bowl level as a rookie in 2012 but struggled mightily in 2014. He improved some in 2015 but not enough to justify his option-year salary, making him one of the league's highest-paid left tackles and leading to speculation he could be cut.

The Vikings could pay Kalil the one-year salary or work out an extension that lessens the cap hit.

The Vikings have tasked veteran offensive line coach Tony Sparano with maximizing the potential of Kalil in a crucial year.
