Former Texas QB Vince Young arrested near Longhorns campus

NFL, College Football, Texas Longhorns, Tennessee Titans

Former Texas quarterback Vince Young was arrested early Monday morning in Austin on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated.

Young was booked into Travis County Jail at 12:46 a.m. Monday after a traffic stop two miles north of the Texas campus.

The arrest warrant said that a police cruiser witnessed Young's car idling for 10 seconds at a green light, then not signaling for a lane change and drifting in the lane while driving. After stopping the car, the officer believed that Young was intoxicated, saying he had glassy eyes, slurred his speech, had a strong odor of alcohol and was swaying while walking. According to the report, Young refused a breathalyzer.

His bail was set at $2,000.

Young apologized in a statement he released Monday night.

"Regardless of the outcome of the pending investigation, I would like my friends, family and fans to know that I do not condone drinking and driving in any way whatsoever. I am very disappointed in myself and am sorry for any conduct that has made this legal process necessary. I specifically want to apologize to the young men and women who look up to me as a role model and my employers at the University of Texas and the Longhorn Network.

"Please let this be a lesson to you all and a moment for you to learn from me. As a public figure, I take very seriously my obligation to set an example for others to learn from."

Young has served as a diversity and community engagement officer at UT, working as a fundraiser for the division's educational programs. In a statement Monday, a university spokesman said officials were working to "determine any appropriate action."

Young led Texas to a national championship victory over USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl, was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy and went on to play six seasons in the NFL, twice earning Pro Bowl honors.

He retired from the NFL in 2014.

Young has also been employed by Longhorn Network as an analyst for Texas GameDay since 2014. A spokesperson said that ESPN has no comment on his arrest at this time.
