Patriots reach 2-year extension with WR Keshawn Martin

NFL, New England Patriots, Houston Texans

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Building depth at the wide receiver position for the next two years, the New England Patriots have reached a two-year, $3 million contract extension with Keshawn Martin, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates on Saturday.

Martin, who was acquired from the Houston Texans in a trade on Sept. 17, has 24 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns this season. He has played in nine games for the Patriots, with eight starts.

In his fourth season out of Michigan State, he was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.

As part of the extension, the 5-foot-11, 194-pound Martin receives a $600,000 signing bonus, with base salaries of $850,000 in 2016 and $1 million in 2017.

He has $25,000 workout bonuses in 2016 and 2017, and the pact includes $200,000 of per-game roster bonuses in each season. There is a $100,000 roster bonus due on the fifth day of the 2017 league year, $750,000 in incentives in both seasons (based on receptions), and a $200,000 escalator that could increase his 2017 base salary based on receptions.

The Patriots have top receivers Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell and Danny Amendola under contract in 2016, although LaFell's production dipped this season and Amendola's base salary spikes to $5 million, which is high for a No. 3 option.
