IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is having surgery Wednesday in New York on his right foot and ankle, sources confirmed.
Bryant is having another bone graft added to the foot and will have the ankle cleaned up. The Cowboys expect him to be ready for the offseason program in April. Dr. Martin O'Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery is performing the operations.
"No one has given me any indication at any level of our medical staff or just in general from outside our medical staff, that he's got an issue that would limit him going into our normal training regime, going into training camp, going into the season next year," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said after the season-ending loss to the Washington Redskins.
Bryant had the initial surgery to repair the fractured fifth metatarsal on Sept. 14, a day after the season opener against the New York Giants in which he caught five passes for 48 yards before leaving the game in the second half. In addition to having a screw implanted in his foot, Bryant had a bone graft at the time to help strengthen the area. In October, he had a stem-cell injection into the foot to help the healing process.
He missed five games and returned Nov. 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Once the Cowboys were officially eliminated from playoff contention, he was inactive for the Week 16 game at the Buffalo Bills and placed on injured reserve before playing Washington. In nine games, Bryant caught 31 passes for 401 yards and three touchdowns.
Bryant missed most of the offseason program, organized team activities and minicamp last year in a contract dispute before signing a five-year, $70 million deal on July 15. He suffered a strained hamstring early in training camp that forced him to miss half of the practices in Oxnard, California, and the four preseason games.
