Bears place WR Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) on injured reserve

NFL, Chicago Bears

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears placed wide receiver Alshon Jeffery on injured reserve with a hamstring injury on Wednesday, the team announced.

In the final year of his contract, Jeffery appeared in just nine games due to a variety of health setbacks that began in training camp when he suffered a serious calf strain in a closed walk-through practice prior to Chicago's preseason opener. Jeffery missed all four exhibition games.

The former Pro Bowl wideout also battled hamstring, groin and shoulder injuries before Chicago ultimately decided to end his season.

When healthy, Jeffery is one of the Bears' top players on offense, catching 54 passes for 807 yards and four touchdowns this season. He tied a franchise record with three straight 100-yard receiving games against Detroit, Minnesota and San Diego.

"Obviously, first and foremost it's probably very frustrating for him," said Bears head coach John Fox. "New things just kept popping up. I think when he was out there he was very productive, much like he's been earlier in his career. That's how I'd assess his season."

Jeffery currently has a dozen 100-yard receiving games in his four seasons with the Bears, tied for fifth most in franchise history. He set career highs with 89 catches for 1,421 yards in 2013. Jeffery also hauled in 10 touchdowns last year.

The 6-foot-3 receiver is 8th in the league with 89.7 receiving yards per game in 2015.

The Bears also placed defensive lineman Eddie Goldman on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Goldman appeared in 15 games with 12 starts, recording 4.5 sacks and six tackles-for-loss. The second-round pick out of Florida State is fourth among NFL rookies in sacks.

The Bears signed defensive linemen Greg Scruggs and Terry Williams to fill the open roster spots.
