Larry Donnell dealing with neck injury that could jeopardize season

NFL, New York Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Things looked promising for New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell earlier this week, but on Tuesday he found out there's a problem with his neck that could keep him out for a while -- possibly the rest of this season.

Donnell missed the past two games with the neck injury, but he and the team believed it was getting better and he was able to practice Monday. A follow-up MRI on Tuesday, however, revealed a new problem, and Donnell did not practice Wednesday.

"It's not looking good," Donnell said Wednesday. "Monday, I was fine. I was out there running, jumping around. I felt good, but I had more tests to get cleared yesterday and they found something else. So I've got to go talk to them about it and see what's going on."

The Giants have some recent experience with serious neck injuries, most prominently the one that ended running back David Wilson's career last year. They know to be careful with them and won't rush Donnell back. He says he feels fine, and although he's frustrated over not being able to play, he acknowledged that a neck injury is nothing to treat lightly.

"We've got to make sure everything's OK in there," Donnell said. "That's more than football you're talking about, when it's your neck."
